What is an affiliate cookie?
When someone clicks an affiliate link, an affiliate cookie containing the partner ID is stored in the customer’s browser. This ensures that purchases can be attributed to the correct affiliate partner, even if the purchase doesn’t happen immediately, but within 30 days of the click.
Why should an affiliate cookie be reset?
In some cases, it may be useful to reset an affiliate cookie to ensure correct and fair attribution.
For example:
- When customers are directed to your product from your own website.
- When customers are directed to your product via your own newsletter.
How can an affiliate cookie be reset?
You can reset an affiliate cookie by modifying the affiliate link to use ?aref=0 instead of the actual affiliate ID. This will overwrite the cookie with an invalid partner ID, preventing the original affiliate from being credited for later purchases.
Here’s an example of how to adjust an affiliate link to reset the cookie:
