Reset existing affiliate cookie
Should no affiliate earn the commission when someone comes through your own marketing? Then reset the affiliate cookie with a simple addition to your link.
What is an affiliate cookie?
When someone clicks an affiliate link, the browser stores the affiliate ID in a cookie. This way the affiliate earns the commission even if the person buys later, up to 30 days after the click.
When to reset the cookie
Sometimes a person originally came through an affiliate but later buys because of your own marketing. For example, when they:
- reach your product through your own website.
- click a link in your own newsletter.
In such cases you can reset the cookie. Then no affiliate earns a commission for this purchase.
How to reset the cookie
Add ?aref=0 to your link. A click on it overwrites the stored affiliate ID. If the person buys afterwards, the purchase is not attributed to any affiliate.
Example:
myshop.tentary.com/p/ABCDEFbecomesmyshop.tentary.com/p/ABCDEF?aref=0
If your link already has parameters, for example ?coupon=SUMMER, add it with &: myshop.tentary.com/p/ABCDEF?coupon=SUMMER&aref=0.
If the person later clicks an affiliate link again, that affiliate counts again. The last click always wins.
