# Update e-mail automation

Changes the fields that you send. All other fields stay, the status too. To activate or deactivate, use [`POST /v1/email/automations/{automation_id}/status`](https://tentary.com/en/help/api/set-email-automation-status/).

- A new trigger counts only for contacts who start later.
- On an active automation, new exit products also remove the contacts who already bought them.

## Authorization

`Authorization: Bearer <API key>`

A personal API key (tnt_...). Create it in the Tentary app on the page AI & API.

## Path parameters

- `automation_id` (integer, required, path): The id from list_email_automations. Limits: min 1.

## Request body

- `name` (string): Name in the Tentary app (contacts do not see it). Limits: minLength 1, maxLength 255.
- `trigger` (string): What starts the series for a contact: new_subscriber (newsletter sign-up), any_purchase, or purchase_of_products (one of trigger_product_ids). Only contacts who subscribed to the newsletter get the e-mails. Allowed values: `new_subscriber`, `any_purchase`, `purchase_of_products`.
- `trigger_product_ids` (array of integer): For purchase_of_products: products from list_products. Limits: min 1, maxItems 200.
- `exit_product_ids` (array of integer): Contacts who buy one of these products leave the automation (for example the product that the series sells). [] = none. Limits: min 1, maxItems 200.

## Response

- `id` (integer): The ID.
- `name` (string): Name in the Tentary app.
- `status` (string): The status. Allowed values: `active`, `inactive`.
- `trigger` (string, can be null): What starts the series for a contact. Allowed values: `new_subscriber`, `any_purchase`, `purchase_of_products`, `null`.
- `trigger_products` (array of object): For purchase_of_products.
  - `id` (integer): The ID.
  - `name` (string, can be null): The name.
- `active_emails` (integer): Active e-mails in the series.
- `contacts_in_automation` (integer): Contacts in the series now.
- `active_since` (string<date-time>, can be null): UTC, like 2026-01-31T14:05:00Z.
- `admin_url` (string<uri>): The page in the Tentary app.
- `exit_products` (array of object): Contacts who buy one of these products leave the automation.
  - `id` (integer): The ID.
  - `name` (string, can be null): The name.
- `emails` (array of object): In the order of the app page (send time).
  - `id` (integer): The ID.
  - `name` (string): The name.
  - `subject` (string): The subject line.
  - `status` (string): The status. Allowed values: `active`, `inactive`.
  - `send_after_days` (integer): Days after the trigger. 0 = at once.
  - `send_hour_utc` (integer, can be null): Hour (UTC) of the send day. null with send_after_days 0.
  - `text_preview` (string): The start of the text, without HTML.
  - `sent` (integer): E-mails sent.
  - `delivery` (object): E-mails per delivery state. skipped = left out by the cooldown.
    - `waiting` (integer): Waiting to be sent.
    - `skipped` (integer): Left out by the cooldown.
    - `failed` (integer): Could not be sent.
    - `soft_bounces` (integer): Soft bounces (a temporary problem, like a full inbox).
    - `hard_bounces` (integer): Hard bounces (the address does not exist).
    - `spam_complaints` (integer): Marked as spam by the recipient.
  - `admin_url` (string<uri>): The page in the Tentary app.
- `more_emails` (boolean): true = the automation has more e-mails than this list (see the app).
